Campylobacter jejuni infection and Guillain-Barre Syndrome: The work of the CDC

“Food safety from the catastrophic complications of Guillain-Barre Syndrome caused by the Campylobacter jejuni food borne illness may become a real risk to the United States going forward with cuts of funding to the CDC, the USDA, and the FDA”…Greg Vigna, MD, JD

The Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) is a collaboration between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and 10 state health departments and conducts surveillance for Campylobacter, Cyclospora, Listeria, Salmonella, Shiga toxin-producing E.coli, Shigella, Vibrio, and Yersinia infections diagnosed by laboratory testing of samples from patients.

Dr. Greg Vigna, MD, JD, national neurological injury attorney states, “Clearly employees of the CDC, USDA, and the FDA are tasked with the very important job that keeps us safe from preventable food borne illness, many of which have the potential to cause long-term disability.   Government workers who are tasked with this important work should not be working remotely and are needed in the office.”

Dr. Vigna explains about the real risk of Campylobacter jejuni, “Guillain-Barre (GBS) is caused by immune mechanism where the body’s response to the bacterial infection cross-reacts with the myelinated motor and sensory nerves of the body leading to motor and sensory nerve damages and varying degrees of paralysis.  I have managed dozens of patients with acute and chronic complications caused by Guillain-Barre following Campylobacter jejuni infection.”

What happened in Lima Peru in 2018 and 2019?

“The number of reported GBS cases increased from 59 in 2017 (incidence: 0.19/100,000) to 262 in 2018 (incidence: 0.81/100,000) and 1,120 in 2019 (incidence: 3.44/100,000)

Our study, describing a large cohort of patients and controls during the 2019 GBS outbreak in Lima, Peru, demonstrates that this outbreak was associated with C jejuni infection, a diarrheal bacterium that is the most common trigger of GBS worldwide”…Ana P. Ramos, M.D.
