Disfiguring Scars

Burn injury survivors suffer a chronic medical condition with ongoing physical and mental deficits compared with the general population.[1] Complications include muscle wasting, anxiety and depression, increased risk of respiratory infections and cardiovascular disease, and increased risk of diabetes.[2]  Long-term symptoms include temperature regulation issues and chronic itching, scarring, contractures, chronic swelling, and potentially cognitive impairments from shock, infection, pulmonary infection and injury, kidney failure, and multisystem failure.[3] 37, 39, 40, 41.

Burn survivors never recover their pre-injury physical health status or mental health status. Studies indicate that physical health status declines after age 55 and declines steeply after age 65. Burn survivors do not recover to their pre-injury baseline related to life satisfaction and wellbeing based on work, school, learning, and social relationships and community integration, with larger burns having diminished employment and social activities compared to those with more minor burns.[4]
